Teacher Profile: Tomoko Niwa, Piano

When did you start playing the piano?

When I was four years old until I was in Year 12. I studied at the Yamaha Music School in Nagoya City, which is the fourth biggest city in Japan. Yamaha is a famous music school worldwide. I kept playing all that time because of my mum. Even though I didn't enjoy it at the time, I'm so glad she made me stick with it. I really appreciate her giving me that opportunity in my life.

If you could open a show for any artist, who would it be and why?

That would have to be Stevie Wonder - because he's born for music.

What is your favourite thing about being a music teacher?

Seeing my students happy to play, and seeing that piano has become part of their life. I love

to see my students motivated to not give up. It doesn't matter to me what or how much they can do. Just to see that motivation there makes me very happy.

What is the best music advice you've been given?

I was always very inspired by my electone teacher, I wanted to play like her. She was pretty famous wedding player in the city where I studied, and a very successful working musician. She inspired in me a joy playing.
