South West Music Regional Conservatorium present A Poet's Love - Douglas Kelly (Tenor) and Tristan Lee (Piano). Works by Schumann, Beethoven and Schubert. Part of the Live Music Concert Series.

An intimate recital featuring art songs by Schumann, Beethoven and Schubert, performed by award winning tenor Douglas Kelly and pianist Tristan Lee. Centered on the expressive beauty of the German Lied tradition, the program explores themes of love, longing, and the poetic imagination through some of the genre's most cherished works.

Meet The Artists:

Douglas Kelly Bio: Douglas Kelly is an internationally performing tenor who has extensive experience in opera, oratorio and as a recitalist. He has been a prize-winner at the Australian Herald Sun Aria (2018) and National Liederfest (2018, 2019) and was a 2025 Emerging Artist with Victorian Opera. His recent performance as Prunier in Puccini’s La Rondine won him best supporting role in an opera at the 2025 Green Room Awards.

His operatic credits include: Janacek’s Kat’ya Kabanova (Kurdryas), Verdi’s Nabucco (Ismaele), Mozart’s Entfuhrung Aus Dem Serail (Pedrillo), Puccini’s La Rondine (Prunier), Dove’s Mansfield Park (Henry Crawford), Williamsons English Eccentrics (Beau Brommel), Cesti’s Orontea (Corindo), Monteverdi’s Il Ritorno D’Ulisse In Patria (Anfinomo and Eurimaco), Mozart’s Le Nozze Di Figaro (Basilio), Stravinsky’s The Rake's Progress (Sellem), Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi (Gherardo), Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas (Aeneas) Jonathon Dove’s Mansfield Park (Henry Crawford). He's been praised and described as ‘charismatic in voice’ and 'powerfully convincing' (Arts Hub), and ‘A splendid Tenor’ and 'suitably fresh and ardent of voice' (Limelight). His concert engagements include Berlioz’ L’Enfance Du Christ, Britten’s War Requiem, Haydn’s Creation and Monteverdi’s Vespro Della Beata Virgine.

As a recitalist he has presented Schubert’s Die Schone Mullerin and Winterreise at the Melbourne Recital Centre, as well as presenting recitals of Britten, Wolf and Schumann cycles at fortyfivedownstairs, Tempo Rubato and in Baden Bei Wien, Austria, with the Schubert Institute. In masterclass and on stage, Douglas has worked with such musicians as Roger Vignoles, Helmut Deustch, Wolfram Rieger, Graham Johnson, Robert Holl, Elly Ameling and Andreas Schmidt.

Tristen Lee Bio: Tristan Lee is a Melbourne born concert pianist, pedagogue and academic, whose performances, recordings and lectures have received critical acclaim throughout Australia and abroad. He has played in major venues in Australia, France, Italy, Lithuania and China, including regular recitals at the Melbourne Recital Centre, Perth Concert Hall, Wigmore Hall, Royal Academy of Music, and St Martin in the Fields in London, Shanghai and Chongqing Grand Theatre, Guangzhou Opera House, amongst many others. As a soloist Lee has performed with orchestras in Australia and the UK, playing concertos by Mozart, Beethoven, Grieg, Rachmaninoff and Brahms. A keen interpreter of music of the present day, Lee regularly performs contemporary piano music and has given numerous world premieres of works by Australian and British composers.

Tristan Lee has appeared on Australian radio and television. His album, ‘Liszt’s Italian Pilgrimage’ was released on Move Records in 2019. He recorded a CD of Brahms piano music in London in 2014, and has a forthcoming release of Beethoven Piano Sonatas

Tristan Lee studied at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, gaining his Masters in Performance in 2009 under Head of Keyboard, Graham Scott. He gained a Bachelor of Music in Performance at the University of Melbourne in 2008, studying under Glenn Riddle. Following his studies in Manchester, Lee remained in the UK for five more years, giving many recitals and being mentored by Leslie Howard and Benjamin Frith. Between 2012 and 2014, Lee undertook a period of study with renowned French pianist, François-Frédéric Guy in Paris, generously supported by the Geoffrey Parsons Trust. During his studies, Lee was a prize winner at numerous national and international piano competitions including the Australian National Piano Award, Australian Youth Piano Recital (1^st Prize and Gold Medal), and ‘Prix Scarbo’ Manchester, and he was the recipient of many other prestigious awards and scholarships, including the Ian Potter Trust (2009).

In 2015, Tristan Lee returned to Australia and the University of Melbourne to undertake a PhD researching Liszt and Beethoven. Lee has been Casual Lecturer in Piano at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, University of Melbourne since 2017. Following the completion of his PhD in 2019, Lee has resided in Melbourne (with his partner, pianist Gintaute Gataveckaite, and pet Tenterfield Terrier, George) performing regularly and teaching a small cohort of dedicated and talented piano students.
